Apple iphone wonderful applications

Apple iphone no doubt has brought in a new wave in the handphone industry. Nowadays, lots of people are buying iphone and some are still considering purchasing one.

The interesting part of it, not only limited to the phone itself; are the applications written for the phone.

Here are some of the ones the team has tested. And maybe parents, especially mummies can make use of them, as some are actually FREE!!! We will be reviewing more applications. So stay tune…! =)

  1. Milestones (Rate : 4)

Use : Records baby’s milestones

Cost : US$4.99

Good : This app keeps track of the weight and height of your baby through the inputs and can plot the information into a chart. You can track and record what your baby can do at a certain month under milestone and moments. What’s more, user-specified milestones can be added if it is not in their list. If you have missed out certain milestones, the program will let you know by highlighting the month range in orange.

Bad : Some of the milestones are not in the list.

  1. My Baby (Rate : 3.5)

Use : Finding names for baby

Cost : FREE

Good : You can find names for a boy and girl separately. You can also specify the origin of the names you wish to search under.

Bad : You need to know the name to search. Or input the first alphabet to do a thorough search for that alphabet. It can be quite tedious.

  1. Baby HowTall (Rate : 3)

Use : Calculates the height of your baby

Cost : US$0.99

Good : It will be fun to estimates how tall your baby will be when he or she grows up. It calculates the height based on Daddy’s and Mummy’s height and gives a range of the heights your baby might be.

Bad : It might not be accurate and there are no other functions besides that.

  1. Breastfeed (Rate : 4.5)

Use : Provides information on breastfeeding

Cost : FREE

Good : It provides general information on breastfeeding. The wonderful part - it covers early breastfeeding management for the time between birth to 48 hours and 48 hours till 2 weeks. It has also includes information on medications and have an FAQ.

Bad : There’s no search function. Hence, mothers may need to read through to get the information.

  1. Baby Flash Cards (Rate : 3.5)

Use : Flashcards of items for baby to learn about objects

Cost : FREE

Good : There a wide range of objects ranging from animals, fruits, furniture, numbers and lots more. The program can be set to display either in alphabetical order or random order.

Bad : The graphics are cute but colors are not vibrant enough to attract baby’s attention. There is no music too.

  1. Sing Along Lite (Rate : 2.5)

Use : Display nursery songs’ lyrics

Cost : Free, US$3.99 for full version

Good : There are lyrics which you can learn so that you can sing the song to your baby. For the full version, you can also play the music and sing along with your kid.

Bad : The majority of the songs may not be localized, hence, you might never heard of these songs yourself; let alone sing to your baby. For the full version, even when there’s music to sing along with, the music is too soft despite you have put the volume to maximum. Hence, it is not useful in having the music. Just get the lite version.

  1. ABC Phonics Animals Lite (Rate : 2.5)

Use : Teaches children on animals, the spelling and its sounds

Cost : FREE, US$1.99 for full version

Good : The colors and pictures are cute. The music/sounds do attract babies.

Bad : The lite version limits the variety of animals displayed. We are too sure if the full version has this restriction.

  1. What to Expect Pregnancy (Rate : 4)

Use : Provide information on pregnancy

Cost : FREE

Good : It can calculate your stages week by week using your EDD. The program will also show your gestational period and the trimester you are in. It will also give you an estimate of the size of your baby in your tummy. The information not only talks about your pregnancy, it will also provide information on your baby.

Bad : What we like about this program – you can take a photo of your pregnancy days. However, it could not be stored as a journal in your phone. You need to save the photo to your phone’s photo album.

  1. Baby Piano Lite (Rate : 4)

Use : A program with piano keys for playing purposes

Cost : FREE

Good : It has a small piano for playing. It can also be switch to animals’ sounds too. Colors are very vibrant. You can also record 5s of whatever you played on the piano keys.

Bad : Limited piano notes - Do, Re Mi, Fa, So, La Ti….

Mustela new product - Body Firming Activator

Mustela has come up with this new range of products under their Mustela 9 Months®. We got interested in one of them - Body Firming Activator. Mothers who are trying to slim down but still breastfeeding, here’s something you can consider. It’s said to supplement your diet and at the same time helps you slim down with its pineapple extract. True or not, well I have a bad diarrhoea after that. And my baby too has a diarrhoea. Not sure if it’s the effect or just coincidence. Well, I am resting for a few days before continuing and see if it really works.

Stay tune… for our review!

Wall decal for your kids’ room!

Thinking of how to decorate your baby’s or kid’s room. Other than mini sized furniture, why not explore wall decals. They add life to a room, of course depending on what you are putting up on your wall… =)

At $20 per piece, I bought 2 sets of wall decals. Maybe I am hoping to have a zoo in my home!!! =p One is a tree branch with animals on it and the other is a circus train, again with animals on it.

The interesting thing about this wall decal – it’s extremely colorful and it got a lot of characters on it. Your baby will be happy and attracted to these colorful pictures when they can see other colours other than red, white and black as in newborns.

Right now, these wall decals can be bought at a small set up store at KK Hospital 1st storey, just outside 7-11 convenient store. Prices of the decals ranges from $10 to $35 depending on the design you have picked, and of course, while stock last!

Decorating kids’ room can be so much fun, because there is no boundary of what you can come up with. Just remember that it must be safe for your kids….

Online Stores

Parents parents parents, do you have this same problem – you have no time to shop, let alone pamper yourself!!! The free time you have, you rather spend it sleeping???? Sounds familiar??? Bet a lot of parents do encountered such situations. Few are too privileged to escape this. Especially those with young babies and children.

With the internet, there are a lot of things you can do with it. I.e. online shopping!!! Yes…. Some are quite skeptical about it. But believe me, if the website is creditable and safe, you do not need to have worries about purchasing items online. I have personally tested a few, and till now, I enjoyed these experiences.

Here are some recommendations for you. (but do not quote me =p because everyone should practice their own discrete when shopping online)

www.orangebear.com.tw
This is a Taiwan company selling fashion clothing and it has big sized fashion that can also accommodate mummies who have yet to slim down, just like me! It originate because the founder feel that big sized women find it hard to find clothing that they can fit in. Imagine, everywhere you go, every clothing is free size!

The good part – it’s cheap even when you include the delivery charges from Taiwan. The bad part – it’s hard to get register online before you can proceed to buy anything.

www.cheerfulmama.com
I do like their nursing bras. Cute and not too expensive. Besides, Serene is very friendly. And when they have received your online payment, they mailed out your order immediately. Unless, it is a weekend and our postman does need a break, else you bet you can receive your order in 2 days.

http://divasvibes.myshopify.com/
Girly stuff for mummies and daughters! Most of their products are hair accessories. Some really looks super sweet and cute, especially their Ribbles series. Florence, who maintains this website, too is friendly and approachable.

Once in a while, they do have items that are not feature on their website. Do join her mailing list and keep in touch of what she has. You will get great finds!

www.babybeans.com.sg
When you reach this website, you will find it so pleasant and warm. The next minute, I will make sure I buy something. They have interesting products for babies like the taggies. And if you purchase 2 or more items, postage is absolutely free!

http://www.kidzloft.com/
Whatever basic items you need for your baby, they have it online. Prices are not costly too! And they have items that are under promotion. A good grab if you need that item. Sometimes, they also have warehouse sales too. Be in their mailing list to be in touch of their events. Really, when they have a sale, it’s a MUST BUY! Because, it’s really cheap.

All right, I hope it’s quite a few sites for you to explore. If you have any good online shops to recommend to our members, notify us! Let us indulge in the joy and convenience of online shopping too. =)

Mummy and Daughter Outfits by Modern Maternity

If you have a baby girl, you might like this. Imagine going out dressing in similar outfits! That’s something cool, isn’t it! I love to do that too!

At Modern Maternity, you get to buy matching clothes for Mummy and little princess. They come in blouses and dresses for you to pick!

This season, they have come up with designs using Japanese printed fabric to come up with cute little dresses and tops. If you want your daughter to dress exactly like you, they have some choices too. Or you can also pick outfits that use similar fabric and material but in different designs.

Either way, you will still get to dress as mother and daughter. Like the idea? Cost of daughter’s outfit from $35+ and Mummy’s from $55+ depending on what you are getting.

The good thing is that it has a rubberized or elastic back which you and your daughter can fit even if in a different sizes.

Daddies, do not envy. Your turn will come. =p

The Baby Bonus Scheme in a Nutshell!

We got some queries from friends and parents-to-be about the Baby Bonus Scheme in Singapore, so we at Embassy of Babies just wanted to share some information on it.

Let’s Summarize The Baby Bonus Scheme in a Nutshell!

Our Singapore Government introduced The Baby Bonus Scheme on 1 April 2001 and it was enhanced on 1 August 2004. The good news is that the latest enhancements on 17 August 2008 extended increased benefits to the first and second child and benefits to Singapore citizen children beyond the fourth child.

“All your children born on or after 17 August 2008 will also enjoy Government contributions in the form of a dollar-for-dollar matching for the amount of savings you contribute to your child’s Children Development Account (CDA). If your child is born before 17 August 2008, he or she will enjoy the Government matching contributions in the CDA if he or she is your second to fourth child.” Reference from source: https://www.babybonus.gov.sg/bbss/html/index.html

In a Nutshell, it is a cash gift of up to $4,000 each for your 1st and 2nd child and $6,000 each for your 3rd and 4th child. The point to note is that it will definitely help to lighten the financial costs of raising children for parents.

We had some feedback from overseas’ friends who shared with us that this is a great scheme and initiative from our Singapore Government and we do agree.

There you go, a Summary of The Baby Bonus Scheme in a Nutshell!

For your information, the CDA is a special savings account that you open at any OCBC Bank or Standard Chartered Bank Branch.

Shoes by Little Feet

Recently, we came across a push cart selling kids shoes and we find them very cute. Bought a pair, of course!

The thing about Little Feet is that it does not restrict itself to only pretty and comfortable shoes; they come in a nicely designed and simple shoe box that you can carry it without the need of another plastic bag upon purchasing.

What's more, in fact, they still give you a little non-woven bag too.

A search online for Little Feet will bring you to www.littlefeet.com.sg. They have a shop front at 120 Maxwell Road
Tanjong Pagar MRT Station,
#B1-37, Singapore 069119

At the website, you can see shoes, definitely! They have got shoes for both girls and boys and for babies too.... the booties are cute!

Monster Daddy!

Monster Daddy!!!

These few months, we have heard about fathers raping their own daughters; the monster daddy from Austria and Australia. Featuring in TODAY paper, I have read about this father molesting his 2 daughters which sparked me to write something about it.

I simply cannot understand why these fathers behave in this way!!! If they have a high sexual desire, they should think of other ways to relieve rather than targeting their daughter. Parents all love their children and by harming them in this way, where’s the love?

Imaging how much the young has to face and the kind of marks these monster daddies left in them. Will it ever recover? I really doubt so…… they have to carry this dark past with them for the rest of their lives!!!!

Why can’t these daddies love them as parents and give them a chance to have a normal childhood??? One word, they are just simply SELFISH!!!. They only think of their needs and simply forget about others.

They deserved and ought to be punished severely. And if there are provisions for a heavier punishment, I am always in favor of it!

Risk of smoking when you are pregnant

Recently, I saw a pregnant lady outside KK Hospital bus stop smoking away with her partner. This is really appalling! We all know that breathing in second hand smoke is already harmful enough. What's more, smoking when you are carrying a baby inside you.

As a mother, when my child fall ill with a fever, I get worried enough. What if the child is born with complications? As parents, our first wish for our children is always good health. Spare a though for them too. It will be hard for them too to cope at such a small age.

Please stop smoking for the sake of your loved ones.

If you need more information about what kinds of adverse effects it has on babies, you can go to www.babycentre.com.sg and search keyword like smoking. One of the web links talking about smoking during pregnancy is

Baby Seat available in ladies washroom…

Over the weekend when I brought our baby on an outing to the new Orchard Central located besides Somerset MRT and opposite Centrepoint, I was impressed with this initiative by the designer of this newly opened shopping mall. Not only that the concept of the stores is different, the toilets are impressive too. The downside of it, there is still a lot of spaces not taken up, which makes shopping there a quick affair.

Speaking of their washrooms, one of the cubicles is equipped with a baby seat. And I find it extremely useful as I can put my baby to sit at the side while I attend to my own needs. I really applaud such initiatives. It makes the outing more pleasant for mothers especially.

We have seen that more malls are baby friendly nowadays. There have better nursing rooms but they were never enough and only available at one level. Another problem faced, in my view is the provision of traveling using a pram. Even when we have the lift, normally we have to wait for a few trips before we can enter one. Either it is packed or people will looked at you as if you are going to enter with an elephant. And they often do not make room for you and the pram even there is enough space. They will just hit on the ‘door close’ button.

Hence, to prevent such a frustrated experience, I always carry my baby. The baby seat in the washroom is definitely something that is welcoming to me and mothers alike.

Protect your children!

With the current H1N1 flu scare; and a few pregnant mummies-to-be and kids getting this virus, it is wise for parents to be extremely caution in their personal hygiene as well as the places they are visiting; be it themselves or their little ones.

Fearing not only for themselves, but for their children too, the common thought parents have in their mind is not to catch this virus so that they do not pass it to their love ones especially their children who are still so young and fragile. The biggest problem most faced is that the flu virus spreads before one really falls ill. That’s kind of scary. =(

We can do all the necessary precautions ourselves but how about the public? Are they as considerate too? This is always a debatable topic. On one hand, we blame those virus carriers for not staying at home and go out spreading the virus; while on the other hand, people are defending them by saying that they are clueless about it too. Well, to each his own, I think…

We can just hope that it will be over soon and of course Singaporeans and whoever who stepped into our country are considerate and responsible enough to practice personal hygiene!!!

We wanted to share an info we received earlier and we thought that was a piece of info that all new mummies should know. If you are a member of Mothercare, most probably you have received it in an email. The article was talking about how we can prevent and fight the H1N1 flu virus through breastfeeding for our babies. And truly enough, breastmilk is still the best for all babies, regardless if there is a virus or not. It contains the antibodies that formula does not have. Therefore, mummies and mummies to be out there, always breastfeed your babies if you can. It should not be a consideration. Parents spent bucks sending their children to schools to discover their talent hoping that their children excel better than other people’s kids. Well, put that thought to use when you delivered your baby. Giving the best ie breastmilk is the best start for him or her. Having a healthy kid is the best. I believe all parents agree too.

And if you are interested to read about this article I have mentioned, visit www.mothercare.com.sg.
